![]() The two instantly attract, as tends to be the case with opposites. The story begins simple enough, with awkward and socially-repressed Joel (Jim Carrey) meeting extroverted and spunky Clementine (Kate Winslet) through the innocent cliché of a long walk on the beach. It’s hard to conceive putting a film like this together. This way of thought, her reality, even though unreal, reminds the audience to be emotional humans who, should never forget to love, to cry, to make mistakes, to give second chances and to simply live.A screenplay like Charlie Kaufman’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is a masterpiece of construction. ![]() In the end, Clementine’s rare vision of the world, where every thought and feeling should be expressed, gives the movie an optimistic, jovial, and a bit of nostalgic touch. He even tries to save his worst memories with her because not only will he keep a piece of her, but will also remind him self to be transparent and honest, just like his beloved. No matter how extreme her feelings are, Joel’s memories expose that he always accepted and cherished her frankness. Such detachment causes her to have even more intense feelings and act irrationally in the reality of the world. Just because she is detached from reality, does not mean she does not have emotions other than content. However, she also proved that a free-spirited life is not always what it seems to be. She feels, and so she acts and vice- versa. She makes the audience wonder if life can be lived with a “right here, right now” mentality, if it can be lived with their version of the Truth, or if what people perceive is what they set their minds to be? Clementine breaks the rules of life by always acting based on what she feels, regardless of others’ emotions (even though she does it unknowingly) or judgements. She is the perfect example of a person who challenges life and everything established without direct philosophical questioning. I admit that I thought this at first, but she is nothing like that. ![]() She took advantage of every single moment of life, but Joel could not live up to her truth… to what she thought was reality.Īfter this explanation, Clementine might seem as a dysfunctional and immature young woman who cannot get her life together. In her mind, her truth basically consisted of carpe diem. Like a child, she was living in her own bubble of truth, and when it bursted she did not know how to manage. However, this reckless choice was not selfish, it was made out of much suffering and pain. It is evident that she acts as an impulsive and impatient child when nobody is there to help her heal the sad wounds of a breakup. What a life! She lives such a fast-paced, independent life that she thinks that her only solution is to erase the love of her life in order to continue with her life. She had no responsibilities, lived daringly, and sought for unconditional love. Yes, she knew the year she was living in, but she acted as if her actions had no consequences. How can someone possibly believe that permanently forgetting about someone will solve all problems? Eventually, I realized that I was confusing her selfishness with her absence from the real world. Like any romantic movie, they were happy, until he found out that he had disappeared from what he thought were her precious memories.Īfter the movie ended, I thought Clementine was selfish. Her spontaneity awakened and enlightened Joel to dig himself out of his depressive hole. However, Clementine’s dedication and endless love for Joel gave meaning to his life. Also, just as she claims in the movie, she applies her “personality in a paste.” She changes from bright blue, to green, to red hair, which all indicate her current mood (and the movie’s time lapse). She has no actual goals her only goal is to live in the present. She just wants to experience every moment in life and find her own peace of mind. She can be perceived as a carefree person, but she is actually an adult struggling to adapt to her adult responsibilities. This ironically named and peculiar character has a whimsical, yet intense personality. The fact that she decides to erase Joel Barish, her boyfriend, off her memories after their relationship crumbles, indicates that she is merciless and impulsive. Unfortunately, since this is a hypothetical situation, she is neither of these. If the audience watching the movie were to judge Clementine Kruczynski by the various meanings of her first name, they would think she is forgiving and sweet as a Clementine orange (which is actually a type of orange found in Northern Africa- ).
